Socks for Christmas
As a longtime Santa Claus at a suburban Chicago mall, Rod Riemersma used to jokingly tell children they would get socks for Christmas if they were naughty.
This year, he stopped telling the joke. Too many children were asking for socks. "They've probably heard their parents say, 'Geez, I wish I had some money to get them clothes,' " says Mr. Riemersma, 56 years old. The Wall Street Journal
I saw a child the other evening, just before the snowfall, wearing a coat, but only sandles. "Where were her socks?" I thought to myself, "what a negligent parent." But maybe they just didn't have any spare ones. I remember when I was growing up in Alabama, some of the kids didn't have but one pair of shoes. How could this country have gone from $100 Nikes to asking Santa for socks for Christmas?
If the JSJ can say storefront Santas are trying to help kids by telling them "it will get better," what can we do as a Christian community? Mat. 25:35-40
We have been collecting mittens and socks and baby clothes during December to give to children in need. We will continue to do so through the end of the month. Just drop them in the crib in the back of the sanctuary, or drop them off at the church office.
