The Advent Conspiracy
I ran across this article in Time on line that tells about a movement in churches to fight back against the commercialism at Christmas. Called the Advent Conspiracy it claims that Christmas still has the power to change the world. It suggests that we do so in four ways: 1) Worship fully 2) Spend less 3)Give more and 4) Love all. The idea is to make Christmas more meaningful. It is not asking that we stop buying presents, but to merely buy one present less and spend the money saved on giving to a cause or ministry. It also talks about giving presence instead of presents.
This coming Sunday we look at Mary's song that she sang when visiting her cousin Elizabeth. Luke 1:46-55 begins with "My soul proclaims the majesty of the Lord," and includes this radical proclamation,
"He has shown strength with his arm and has scattered the proud in their conceit, casting down the mighty from their thrones and lifting up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty."
The Christmas message is meant to be revolutionary. Maybe we should be about making it so once more.
